Innovation in Intelligent Thermoforming Technology Drives Global Packaging Industry Upgrade

09 Sep, 2026
Global demand for biodegradable packaging is growing rapidly as governments worldwide tighten restrictions on single-use plastics. Industry research shows that the global biodegradable packaging market was valued at approximately USD 15 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 28 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of around 11%.

The European Union remains the most active market, driven by the Single-Use Plastics Directive and extended producer responsibility schemes. Many member states have imposed taxes on non-recyclable plastic packaging, pushing food companies to switch to compostable materials such as PLA. Similar policies are emerging in Asia, with Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea announcing timetables for banning certain disposable plastic products.

Biodegradable materials still face challenges in cost and performance. PLA-based products generally cost 20-30% more than traditional PET containers, and their heat resistance limits application in hot food scenarios. However, continuous progress in material modification and molding technology is narrowing the gap, and thermoforming equipment makers have developed PLA-specific process control systems to improve production stability and reduce scrap rates in large-scale manufacturing.

Industry experts believe that the combination of policy pressure and consumer awareness will make biodegradable packaging a mainstream choice in the coming decade. Manufacturers that master both material science and cost control will gain significant advantages in this fast-growing segment, and those with establisheThe global thermoforming packaging industry is undergoing an intelligent transformation wave. In September 2023, at the Interpack trade fair in Munich, German machinery giant KraussMaffei unveiled its fourth-generation fully automatic vacuum thermoforming production line, the “SmartForm 4.0”. Integrating AI visual inspection, real-time IoT monitoring and adaptive temperature control technologies, the system boosts production efficiency by 40% while cutting energy consumption by 25%.

The core highlight of this technology lies in its dynamic mold adjustment system. The equipment can automatically detect material thickness and adjust thermoforming parameters accordingly. It achieves a manufacturing precision of ±0.05 mm for PET thermoformed trays, far superior to the ±0.2 mm tolerance of conventional processes. This production line has already been deployed at Nestlé’s facilities and meets the stringent aseptic packaging requirements set out in the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR).

Industry analysts state that the global market for intelligent thermoforming machinery stood at approximately USD 5.8 billion in 2023. It is projected to rise to USD 9.2 billion by 2028, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7%. Driven by surging demand for food and medical device packaging, the Asia-Pacific region will emerge as the primary growth engine.

Michael Ruf, CEO of KraussMaffei, commented: “Intelligent thermoformed packaging is not merely a revolution in production efficiency; it also serves as a vital enabler for sustainable development. Thanks to precise control over material waste, plastic waste can be reduced by 15% for every ton of thermoformed packaging manufactured.”
