In 2024, China’s exports of thermoformed packaging maintained steady growth. Annual export volume reached RMB 20 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 10% and accounting for 16.7% of the industry’s total output. Amid global industrial chain restructuring and stricter environmental regulations, Chinese manufacturers have successfully expanded into Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia and other regions through technological innovation and green transformation. Growth is primarily driven by packaging applications for new energy vehicles, medical products and other sectors.

  1. Technological Breakthroughs Fuel High-End Market Expansion

Intelligent equipment and eco-friendly materials have become core export competitive advantages. Automated thermoforming machines independently developed by domestic manufacturers adopt rapid mold change technology, boosting production efficiency for small-batch, multi-variety orders by 60%. This equipment is exported to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, supporting the upgrading of local manufacturing industries. Anti-static packaging for new energy battery cells cuts transportation costs by 30% via optimized material structures, establishing itself as a key component within international automakers’ supply chains.

  2. Dual Momentum from Policies and Market Demand

The EU Plastic Tax and global plastic restriction policies are forcing industrial upgrading. Spain imposes a tax of EUR 450 per tonne on non-recyclable plastic packaging, pushing Chinese enterprises to accelerate R&D of alternative materials. In 2024, exports of biodegradable thermoformed packaging rose to a 12.5% share.
Surging demand has emerged in Southeast Asia driven by industrial relocation: export orders grew 25% year-on-year in 2024, with eco-friendly PET products making up 70% of shipments. The Middle Eastern market also expanded. Thermoformed chocolate packaging boxes entered royal supply chains via distributors, with annual orders climbing by 25%.

  3. Future Trends

China’s thermoformed packaging exports are projected to exceed RMB 22 billion in 2025. Biodegradable material products will account for 15% of total exports, while exports of intelligent thermoforming equipment will maintain an annual growth rate of 15%. Supported by the dual strengths of “technology + brand”, manufacturers are establishing overseas production bases to achieve localized services and cost optimization, further consolidating their share in the global marketplace.
